In the business world, it’s not only what you know but also who you know that determines your level of success. It’s a world of both skills and brands, including personal brands.
Business networking is one of the most effective strategies for business success. Having a quality business network means that you can build more credibility as a professional, get references and insider tips, and sell you and your services better.
This is why, as a communication coach, I believe that developing your professional network is a worthwhile thing to do.
The first thing to consider is that business networking takes time. You don’t develop a strong business network, with plenty of quality professionals, just like that. It takes months and even years.
You need to understand this and to accept it if you are to use business networking effectively. The way I see it, it’s not a hit and run thing, it’s rather a long term business strategy. However, trust me when I say that if done correctly, it will payback your time and effort. Read more...

The Sassy Ladies’ Toolkit for Start-up Businesses is a very relevant, useful tool for anyone interested in being her (or his) own boss. The book takes the idea of starting a business and breaks it down into steps. The authors use the metaphor of a journey to aid the entrepreneur in starting down the road.
The book starts off having the prospective business owner visualize a variety of things. She should visualize herself performing the job she has chosen and where that will get her in her life. It also encourages the use of positive thinking and has her change negative thoughts to positive affirmations. In each chapter there is encouragement, bolstered by pertinent advice.
Throughout the book and at the end of each chapter there are exercises to maintain focus to accomplish the task at hand. The questions posed at the end of each chapter ask not only to state what was discussed, but how the business owner will apply the ideas put forth, to her particular endeavor. The exercises require a good amount of thought and provide a practical means to accomplishing each individual step. Approached properly, performing these exercises would seem to make the business start-up process almost fool-proof.

Social networking on the Web is all the rage these days, and rightfully so, but there’s another kind of networking that can help you gain customers and generate sales: face-to-face networking.
It’s the tried-and-true way of networking, which involves shaking hands and talking to someone who’s standing right in front of you, and it has been used for thousands of years with great success.
I recently went to two business networking meetings in my town, run by separate organizations, and the experience was positive both times. One involved a breakfast meeting at a local country club, and the other was a luncheon at a restaurant. At both events there were more than three dozen local businesspeople in attendance. I met people from all walks of life, and the one thing they had in common was that they believed in the concept of networking to generate more business. Read more...

It was kind of funny to have all these online advertising professionals asking me all about the website everybody used in college. Didn’t they get the memo? I’m new. I should be asking the questions around here. The subject of Facebook.com is an interesting one that’s worth a closer look.
Without question 2005 was the year of MySpace. Before Rupert Murdoch’s 0 million social networking venture took the interactive world by storm, it’s difficult to believe that even the most optimistic of the billionaire’s lackeys would have predicted that new acquisition would more than quadruple its reach within a matter of months. With 23.5 billion page views by February, MySpace became the second most trafficked site on the Internet.
Murdoch’s success naturally generated buying interest in anything deemed online social networking. One proposed deal in March 2006, was Viacom’s unsuccessful 0 million bid for Facebook.com, the phenomenon started by wunderkind Mark Zuckerberg. After Facebook.com declined the offer, its founders pegged Facebook.com’s worth at two billion dollars. Perhaps the brilliant sparks from MySpace’s success has blinded Facebook.com to the flipside reality of Friendster’s paradise lost. There’s a real chance Facebook won’t see an offer this generous again. Read more...
